Thermo King Extends Compatibility with B100 Biofuel to Support Sustainable Refrigerated Transport

Thermo King’s diesel truck refrigeration units are now certified with more sustainable fuel options, ensuring no impact on maintenance or warranty coverage.

Thermo King®, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand of Trane Technologies, has extended the compatibility of its diesel truck refrigeration units with EN 14214 standard B100 FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) biofuel, taking another step towards  decarbonisation of transport and a future with more sustainable cities

This development is part of Thermo King’s and Trane Technologies’ commitment to providing customers with alternative solutions to fossil fuels. Thermo King’s truck diesel engine units are now certified as compatible with another renewable fuel to lower emissions while maintaining operational reliability and service coverage. In 2021, Thermo King validated the performance of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fossil-free diesel.

The B100 biofuel, usually made from feedstocks such as rapeseed oil, can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by around 60% and cut fine particulate emissions by up to 78%. This equates to a total saving of up to 50 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over the lifetime of the unit. To ensure quality and engine compatibility, the biofuel must adhere to the EN14214 standard. Additionally, the refrigeration unit needs to be specifically prepared for the use of this biofuel.

Diesel Truck Thermo King units meet the most stringent Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) Stage V homologation standards specifically for EN14214 B100 biofuel. A factory-installed B100 biofuel option is now available on all new Thermo King TX-Series models.
