IAA 2026: The year of the delivery
Event
What did IAA 2026 tell us about the future of refrigerated transport? Which secrets did our E-Zone spill? From smarter energy use to low-GWP refrigerants and lifecycle emissions, this was the year of the delivery.
To everyone who made the trip to the Thermo King E-Zone at IAA 2026: thank you for stopping by, and congratulations on surviving another intense week on the show floor. (Our average step count for the week was 104,824, by the way.)
IAA chose “We Deliver” as its overarching theme this year. That’s precisely what our E-Zone was built to do: put ready and available zero-emission refrigeration on the road today, backed by a broad range of power solutions and digital services.
But what else marked the 2026 edition of IAA Transportation?
1. There is no single route to electric transport refrigeration
No two cold chains look identical. So why should their electrification journeys?
Some fleets are sprinting ahead with 100% electric chassis-and-unit combinations; others rely on hybrid platforms or the AxlePower kinetic energy recovery system to smooth their transition.
Thermo King’s role is to deliver at every point in that journey, practically and economically. That shows through our products, like the E-Volution, a full-electric range catering to the unique needs of large truck customers doing inner and intercity transport.
But it also shows in everything else that surrounds your (electric) journey. That’s why we have Max Your Cool, which maximizes your unit uptime and performance through telematics, uptime contracts, genuine parts, fuel-saving accessories and more.
2. Refrigeration is becoming part of the vehicle energy system
When the truck is electric, every kilowatt-hour counts.
That makes closer integration between vehicle and refrigeration technology increasingly important. At IAA, we enjoyed demonstrating this with the A-500e and Tesla Semi collaboration.
A prime example of our close, early-stage engineering work with (electric) vehicle manufacturers. By working hand-in-hand with OEMs from the design phase onward, we ensure our units optimize power draw, communicate smoothly with the vehicle’s software, and help protect driving range.
Also, what better way to stress the ePTO readiness of our electric lineup, right?
3. New technology needs easier ways to prove itself
Electrification isn’t only about creating new technology. Fleets also need to know what that technology will actually do in their operation. That’s the thinking behind our AxlePower Try & Buy rental program.
For operators curious about the impact of AxlePower on their trailer refrigeration, the program swaps a large upfront investment for a fixed monthly fee and trial period.
You test in the real world, run the numbers in the real world, and then decide based on those results.
4. Low-GWP refrigerants are one part of the full emissions puzzle
At IAA, we introduced Advancer-S with a low-GWP A2L refrigerant, cutting refrigerant Global Warming Potential by nearly 90%. The upgrade will gradually roll out across our full portfolio.
Though important, it’s only one part of the full emissions puzzle.Fuel and energy efficiency, operational use and the full lifecycle of the equipment all count.
That brings another growing theme at IAA:
5. Lifecycle emissions are becoming business data
At IAA, Thermo King pioneered Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Certification. Simply put, it provides insight into the full footprint of your refrigeration unit, from material sourcing and assembly to usage and end of life.
The certification is third-party verified and supports fleets with their sustainability reporting, including CSRD and Scope 3 targets.
You weren’t sure where your real impact hid? Well, with the LCA Certification, now you know.
So, what did IAA 2026 teach refrigerated transport?
Maybe the biggest takeaway is that the conversation has moved on from diesel versus electric.
Today, the focus shifts to energy and fuel efficiency, integrating refrigeration with the vehicle, and measuring lifecycle impact. And these are the challenges we solve with you today.
Wherever you are in your fleet’s electric transition, whatever vehicle you drive and whatever power source works for you: Thermo King is there with you, ready to deliver.
