Thermo King Zero Emissions Trailer Unit Optimizes Power Management and Minimizes Energy Consumption

19th September 2012

All-electric trailer refrigeration unit provides energy-efficient, sustainable transport for fresh and frozen applications

The innovative Zero Emissions Trailer Unit from Thermo King is an all-electric refrigeration system featuring an advanced multi-functional power management system that takes power from any source and converts and conditions it to provide optimum performance with minimum energy consumption.

Thermo King, a manufacturer of transport temperature control systems for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, developed this all-electric trailer refrigeration unit to provide energy-efficient, sustainable transport for fresh and frozen applications. It also can make a positive impact on the carbon footprint of transport companies.

The unit features a closed loop, two-stage R-744 trans-critical refrigeration system which offers precise temperature control at fresh and frozen conditions.

This solution provides a unique variable two-stage compressor, variable frequency gas cooler and evaporator blowers that, in conjunction with Thermo King’s control algorithms, provide optimum performance at the lowest possible energy consumption.

This solution offers a 60 dB(A) noise level or lower, compliant with PIEK standards, allowing for night time distribution in urban and residential areas.

“This unit is a demonstration project that combines an environmentally responsible refrigerant choice with advanced power electronics. Power can come from a number of sources such as a truck-mounted generator, shore power or a “clean and silent genset,” said Mark Watson, vice president of strategic product planning at Thermo King.

“Commercialization plans will depend on long-term testing to ensure the highest level of reliability and durability in all applications, which is what our customers expect from Thermo King,” he added.
