Intermodal 2019: time for some big announcements

1st December 2019

Another month, and another event for Thermo King: this time Intermodal Europe 2019. The venue was Hamburg, with an audience of key shippers, shipping lines, freight forwarders, ports, rail freight operators, logistics companies, and container professionals.

In other words it was a busy event where you need to arrive with a powerful story to stand out. Fortunately we had Jessica Poliner, VP and General Manager, Thermo King Global Marine, Rail, and Air on hand.

Her keynote title alone, ‘(Re)making room for Thermo King’, gave attendees advanced warning that big announcements were coming!

New innovations from Thermo King

“I would encourage you all to make room for a much stronger and bigger Thermo King, because we’re back”, was Jessica’s opening line. A bold statement that she backed up by outlining planned developments for 2020:

In addition, Jessica discussed an environmental initiative that is targeting a 25% reduction in global food loss and food waste.

Introducing the SG5000 genset

The biggest launch news came with the introduction of the new SG5000 genset. Armed with a prototype displayed on the Thermo King booth, the show provided the perfect backdrop to highlight the unit’s standout features:

  • The SG5000 for marine reefers combines high performance with low running costs
  • Utilizing a reliable and efficient power source, the genset is also full-life CARB compliant
  • Available in both clip-on and undermount formats, the SG5000 is designed to power all ISO reefers on the market

To again quote from Jessica’s keynote: “ We will offer a full range of generator set options, including the only lifetime CARB-complaint unit and an NRMM-compliant unit for Europe. Our vision is to remake Thermo King, and to offer the broadest product portfolio in the industry. We are committed and here to stay.”

Leasing and rental support

Another talking point at the event was the effort Thermo King is making to help leasing and rental companies in the intermodal space. Conversations focused on the recent announcement that our gensets are now available as part of Thornton Group’s rental offering:

  • Customers now have alternate ways to invest capital to meet their genset requirements
  • As a result they can calculate individual prices for particular shipments
  • This removes the need to purchase hardware, thereby gaining more operational flexibility

A prominent position

Overall, Thermo King made a big splash at Intermodal 2019. From strong press interest to excellent networking opportunities, it’s an event that provides a great opportunity to meet with customers and prospects – and to showcase our continuing commitment to innovation.

Asked what she thought of the event Gulsah Metinoz, Sales Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Thermo King Marine responded: “Intermodal continues to be a gathering spot for all the key industry players, suppliers and customers. Thermo King again had the prominent position at the show, and enjoyed a high number of visitors interested in the product displays of reefers and gensets”.

Gulsah then added: “announcements from Jessica around new product launches for 2020 were received with great enthusiasm, and were taken as a token of Thermo King’s re-emergence on the marine landscape”.
